A BankUnited Health Savings Account can help you offset certain out-of-pocket medical expenses not typically covered by high-deductible health plans. You can claim a tax deduction for contributions made by you or someone other than your employer. Distributions may be tax free if you pay for qualified medical expenses1 such as doctor’s visits, medications, medical equipment, vision and dental care.

Health Savings Account 4 Details

  • Control how much you put into the account and whether to save for future expenses or pay current medical expenses (up to HSA contribution limits). See current HSA contribution limits.
  • Use the funds in your account to pay for current or future qualified medical expenses—including those your insurance may not cover, such as:
    • Health insurance or medical expenses if unemployed
    • Medical expenses after retirement (before Medicare)
    • Out-of-pocket expenses when covered by Medicare
    • Long-term care expenses and insurance
  • Funds remain in the account from year to year, there are no "use it or lose it" rules
  • Accounts are completely portable, so you can keep your HSA even if you change jobs, change your medical coverage, or become unemployed
  • Save for future medical expenses and grow your funds through investment earnings
  • You may even be able to lower your premium with health insurance coverage that has a higher deductible and less out-of-pocket per month
  • An HSA may provide you with tax savings 3:
    • Tax deductions when you contribute to your account
    • Any interest that you earn is tax exempt
    • Tax-free withdrawals for qualified medical expenses

  2. A $2.50 fee will be charged for each transaction performed at a non-proprietary ATM that is not within the Allpoint Network. Fees charged by the ATM owner/operator may also apply.
  3. Distributions used for non-qualified medical expenses will be taxable and may be subject to penalties. BankUnited does not offer legal, tax or accounting advice. Please consult your tax advisor for questions concerning your personal situation.
  4. To be eligible for a health savings account, you must be enrolled in a high-deductible health plan that meets IRS guidelines for the annual deductible and out-of-pocket maximum. Additional eligibility requirements and contribution limits apply.

A $15 early closeout fee will be assessed if the Account is closed within 6 months of the account opening date. Fees may reduce earnings. Additional fees, terms and conditions apply.
